Everyone should be prepared for an emergency with a survival kit, but not many of us are. We all saw how Hurricane Katrina affected the golf coast. Those that were not killed or did not evacuate immediately were left stranded in unsanitary conditions with any way to get fresh food, water, or the necessary medical attention.

First and for most, if you can, you need to evacuate when told. However, sometimes things come up and you are not always able to get out on time. So having these things handy in your survival kit will help you and your family copes with any disaster that may arise.

You need to have important paperwork locked away in a waterproof bags or a portable safe that will guard against fire and flood. These papers should be things like identification, emergency contacts, medical conditions, marriage license, etc, etc. Also, you should have your doctor’s name and extra medication put up as well, at least a 10-day supply, because you may not be able to get any for a few days.

You also need a bag of first aid that will take care of any injuries that may occur. You need to have at least one first aid kit for each member of your family. Water makes up 60% of your body weight, there for you will die from dehydration before you do of hunger. You cannot go more than two days without water, you can live up to 2 weeks without food, but water is essential. You need at least gallon of water per day per family member.

At least 3 months worth of canned goods should be stored, and energy bars for about 2 people that is 24 bars, 12 bars a piece. They have a 5-year shelf life. Sealed MRE’s or Military Ready to Eat meals is an excellent way to store food and they will be good for a couple of years as well.

You need to have batteries and flashlights as well as matches that are waterproof, and blankets. This is essential because if you are exposed to the elements you will have to refuge from the elements. A tent is good to have as well because it will provide shelter. There are flashlights you can shake and charge and they will last approximately 30 hours. Also, an emergency radio so that you can hear what is going on if the government or local radio issues any plan of action.

Rope, gloves, dust masks and a couple of Swiss army knives will come in handy as well. This will enable you to cut things and protect your hands and lungs from any debris and dust flying around. You also need a hygiene kit. Which should include soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, wet naps, and tissues as well as an infectious waste bag and some toilet paper. Some people even put in a deck of cards for entertainment purposes.

You should also include a survivor whistle that will allow you to call for help if you are trapped, also compass, signal mirror, flint starter, waterproof container, lanyard and shrill whistle

These items in your survival kit should assist you in finding your way around if you are disoriented.

If you have an infant you need to make sure you have special items for them. Diapers, wipes, warm clothes, a pack, and play, infant medicine, bottles, food. A packed and readily accessible diaper bag will make sure your child is taken care of and has their own needs met.

If you have pets they need to have survivor kits as well. You need to have enough water and food, as well as identification and pet records from your vet. In case you and your pet get separated you may be able to find them again with the proper paperwork.

You also need to make sure you have the proper things in your vehicle. Make sure you have extra gas, water, and oil stored. As well as a good spare tire and fix a flat. You will also need reflectors and jumper cables. As well as a good pack of glow sticks and road flares. This will ensure that you are seen if you get stranded. Also, a fire extinguisher is a good item to have on hand. Make sure you have one that can treat several different types of fires from electrical to chemical.
